What to expect

If you have decided it’s time to see a therapist, then you have already done the hardest part of therapy.  That is, recognizing and reaching out to speak with someone who can help. You understand how important your mental and emotional health is and are ready to take the next steps to improve your well-being.

Before your first session you might feel nervous, and anxious.  This is completely normal.

Your therapist will help guide your first session and ask you questions such as:

  • Why are you seeking therapy?  What brought you here?

  • Questions about your personal history and current situation

  • What type of symptoms do you have?  Are you suffering from other issues because of your initial problem?

Your job in therapy is to be open and honest.  Therapy is a team effort, if you do not take an active part in your therapy you will not find it beneficial to you.

Feel free to take notes during your session if there is something that you want to make sure that you remember. It can also be helpful to write down any thoughts or questions that you think of between sessions.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions. The more you understand the counseling experience or how counseling works, the more comfortable you’ll be.
